No. 88.
Mr. Williamson to Mr. Fish.

No. 232.

Sir: I have the honor to inform you that an unofficial letter has been received in this city from the minister of foreign affairs of Nicaragua, in which he states that a British subject from Jamaica is attempting to create a revolution in the Mosquito territory of Nicaragua, with a view of separating it from that state. He expresses the belief, or rather the suspicion, that the British government is giving countenance to the scheme.

My information comes from * * *, who says he has seen the letter.

[Page 130]

The British chargé d’affaires, as I understand him, denies all knowledge of such a movement, and emphatically declares his government has no sympathy with any scheme that has in view the dismemberment of Nicaragua.

He has told me, however, that he has been recently instructed to make a vigorous prosecution of the claims of British subjects against Nicaragua.

I have, &c.,

GEO. WILLIAMSON.
