Conference in Pres. office with Knowland, Ferguson, Millikin, Bill Rogers, Adams, Persons on Bricker Amendment compromise—our GOP boys on Hill still trying to compromise with Bricker isolationists—George and Dems now got jump on them with simple [?] George Amendment—Ferguson, Millikin scared to death of fight, keep backing off as usual—Knowland inept in handling it—fine mess, all of our own, because our people haven’t got the guts to lick B.A. once and for all and then pass substitute Knowland amendment—best they can do now, is bi-partisan approach on compromise, giving Dems credit for saving Constitution—now have to confer with George, in addition to Bricker—How dumb can we get?—Pres. getting really fed up with these tactics.
