Sir: With reference to the department’s cable,
November 6, and subsequent correspondence in regard to the settlement of
the Alsop claim, I have the honor to inclose herewith a copy of a note
from the foreign office, dated the 30th instant, stating that His
Majesty the King will have much pleasure in acting as mediator for the
adjustment of this dispute. This decision has also been communicated to
the Chilean minister in London by Sir Edward Grey.

Your Excellency: In your excellency’s note
of the 16th instant you were so good as to inform me that you had
received instructions to convey to His Majesty the King the formal
request of the United States Government that he should be graciously
pleased to accept the office of mediator for the settlement of the
Alsop claim, which has for some time past been outstanding between
the United States and Chile.
In reply I am happy to state that I have been instructed by His
Majesty to inform you, for communication to your Government, that he
will have much pleasure in acting as mediator for the adjustment of
this dispute.
I would add that this decision of His Majesty has been likewise
communicated to the Chilean minister, who had addressed a similar
request to His Majesty on behalf of his Government.
