Memorandum by Mr. Joseph G. Green of the Division of Western European Affairs

Rossi Longhi43 called me by telephone this afternoon. He told me that the Embassy had just received a telegram from the Foreign Office stating that Ungarelli had been transferred and that his transfer would be effective as soon as the Vice Consul who is to take his place was able to reach his post.

I told Rossi Longhi that I was pleased to have that information as the long delay had been causing us embarrassment. I asked him when the actual departure of Ungarelli from Detroit could be expected.

Rossi Longhi replied that he did not know exactly when Ungarelli’s departure would occur; that the man who is to replace him is Vice Consul Enrico Guastone-Belcredi, now stationed in Ottawa, and that he supposed that Guastone-Belcredi would arrive in Detroit in about a month.

I asked Rossi Longhi whether we could inform our correspondents of Ungarelli’s impending departure. He replied in the affirmative saying that Ungarelli’s transfer had been announced in Rome.
