General Funston to the Secretary of War
1734. Following just received from Pershing:
Reference Ahumada affair, one of five enlisted men returned from Boyd’s troop this morning says they were horse holders and reports Boyd’s troop had fight at Carrizal. That during discussion between Captain Boyd and General [Page 594] Gomez, regarding Boyd’s proceeding further, Mexican troops surrounded Boyd and began firing. Says firing continued some time before they left. General Bell reports Juarez garrison left for Ahumada saying they were preparing to attack our forces. Have given orders for movement on Ahumada with stronger force than previously planned, leaving only cavalry to cut railroad at Callego.
