The Consul General at Hankow (Lockhart) to the Secretary of State

112. The following telegram has been sent to the Legation:
“November 10, noon. Steamship Ifung and lighter No. 1, both of Yangtze Rapid Company, fired upon at three different places by trench mortars and rifles on Saturday14 between Chenglingki and Ichang. American naval guard on Ifung returned fire in each case [Page 213] of attack on that vessel. Resumption of through passenger traffic between Hankow and Peiping announced by Railway Administration effective today. This marks first through train service between Hankow and Peiping since approximately March 15, 1930. Repeated to the Department.”
