Summary

Senegal and the United States have enjoyed excellent relations since Senegal’s independence from France and the dissolution of the Mali Federation in 1960. Senegal works closely with both USAID and the Peace Corps to promote improvements in domestic living standards and economic development.

Recognition

U.S. Recognition of the Republic of Senegal, 1960.

The United States recognized the Republic of Senegal on September 24, 1960, when the American Embassy at Dakar (formerly accredited to the Federation of Mali) so informed the Foreign Minister of Senegal. The Republic of Senegal had withdrawn from the Federation of Mali and declared its independence on August 20, 1960 (see Mali).

Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations were established with the Republic of Senegal on September 24, 1960, when the American Embassy at Dakar in the Republic of Senegal was established, with Roswell D. McClelland as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim. The Embassy at Dakar had been accredited previously to the Federation of Mali, which no longer existed (see Mali).
