The Ambassador in the United Kingdom (Winant) to the Secretary of State

4920. Your 4784 of June 16 reached me this morning. I have taken up your suggestion with Mr. Eden formally and have also discussed it informally with Sir John Anderson68 and Richard Law. Mr. Eden in my opinion is the best man to bring up the subject in the Cabinet but both Anderson and Law are friendly and directly interested.

I believe you were wise in suggesting that the conversations should be informal and it will much simplify the difficulty in arranging such a meeting if we keep it below the ministerial level.

Mr. Eden told me that he would get me a reply shortly.

Winant
  1. Chancellor of the Exchequer.
