The Secretary of State to the Consul General at Naples (Brandt)

236. For Kirk.44 The Department has been reliably informed that the files of the so-called American Section of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs contained, during the period of the Fascist regime and German occupation, information of considerable value to the United Nations in dealing with post-war Germany. The Department would like to have these files set aside for inspection by authorized representatives of this Government.

Consult with Reber and ascertain if this request should be addressed by the Control Commission to the present Italian Government, which should be willing to cooperate in a matter of this kind, or to the Allied military authorities in Rome.
