File No. 594/51.

Minister Dodge to the Secretary of State.

No. 150.]

Sir: Referring to my dispatch, No. 122, of the 3d instant,1 stating that I had received a note from the vizier for foreign affairs advising me that the Sultan had sent instructions to the governor of Mequinez urgently commanding him to secure there a house to be rented by the Gospel Missionary Union of Kansas City, I have the honor to inclose to you herewith a copy of a letter which I have now received from Rev. George C. Reed in answer to my letter2 to him therein mentioned. The statement in it will be noted that after some delay the governor had informed him that he had been unable to find a house for these missionaries.

I have now written a further note to the vizier informing him of the governor’s reply to Mr. Reed, and expressing my surprise thereat in view of my information that the governor could readily have found a suitable house if he had sincerely endeavored to do so. I have requested that further explicit orders might be sent him to execute the Sultan’s former commands.

While adding that I will continue to keep the department advised as to the matter,

I have, etc.,

H. Percival Dodge.
