File No. 23640/48.

The Secretary of State to the Chinese Minister.

No. 199.]

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 16th instant by which, under instructions from your Government, you convey to the Government and people of the United States the thanks of the Government and people of China for the hospitalities and courtesies extended to Prince Tsai-t’ao during his stay in the United States.

It gives me great satisfaction to observe from your note that his imperial highness was exceedingly pleased with the result of his mission to this country and greatly impressed with the friendly feeling everywhere shown by the American people toward China, and it is especially gratifying to the President and the officers of this Government that the treatment accorded to his imperial highness during his recent visit to this country was such as to merit so courteous an expression of appreciation on the part of the Imperial Chinese Government.

Accept, etc.,

P. C. Knox.
