The United States and Tajikistan have consistently maintained a cooperative relationship in order to boost living standards in Tajikistan and cooperate on matters of concern to both nations, such as the stabilization of Afghanistan, the fight against terrorism, and interdiction of the opium trade.

The United States recognized Tajikistan’s independence on December 25, 1991, when President George H.W. Bush announced the decision in an address to the nation regarding the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Tajikistan previously had been a constituent republic of the USSR.
Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations were established on February 19, 1992, when President George H.W. Bush announced the decision in a press statement.
Establishment of the American Embassy in Dushanbe, 1992.
The American Embassy in Embassy Dushanbe was established March 13, 1992, with Edmund McWilliams as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim.
